Surviving the Blue Norther by J. B. Cearley Winter Wisdom

We got some more sacks and the newspapers from the house. Dad found some scrap lumber and we built a fire on the ground around the bottom of the pipe. After 20 minutes, the ice finally melted and the mill began to pump water.
Now getting water was much easier than climbing that old ladder and dipping water from the tank. We simply filled the buckets at the hydrant, then set them on the ground so the stock could drink their fill.
The next day we used the last of the coal. It was still too cold to dare to drive the Model-A 16 miles to town for supplies. Antifreeze had not made its way to West Texas, and we knew the radiator would be sure to freeze. "What'll we do for heat?" I asked Dad.
"You boys go to that pile of old fence posts and cut up about 10 of them. That will last through the day. Then we'll try and get to town tomorrow."
Another day arrived and it was not so cold. The norther was drifting out of the area. After working for three hours, we got the water line thawed so the stock tank filled with water from the underground pipes. to be continued ...
