We put on our heavy clothes and went outside into the blizzard. I looked around, shivering in the biting wind, and saw that most of the snow was being blown against the tumbleweeds along the fencerows. We wouldn't get enough moisture from the snow to wet a hat.
We clumped over to the windmill. Dad asked, "Where's the old ladder?"
Alvin, my older brother, said, "It's out by the stack of bundle feed. We had it there capping off that mountain of feed."
"You boys get it," Dad said, studying the tall overhead tank.
"How'll we get water for the stock?" I asked Brother as we went for the ladder.
"I don't know. The water pipes on the windmill are all frozen."
We brought the ladder and Dad driected us to set it against the storage tank. Then he turned to me. "Since you're the lightest, you'll have to climb the ladder and let the water down to us. We'll carry the buckets to the stock." to be continued ...
