I did not know that. So we just make this weird assumption about him?
I've had 3/4 a bottle of wine, so don't quote me on this. I think it originally originated in the 17th century as a riddle to which the answer is egg. And along the way it mutated from riddle to story with the implicit assumption of an egg attached without any direct mention of it. Also, a Humpty Dumpty referred to a clumsy person or a drunk; see also weeble wobble.

I think's probably because someone thought it was better to tell kids he was an egg than a person who splattered all over the place falling off a wall.
I doubt it.
so many old nursery rhymes are so dark

I think someone was just stupid at one point, and... it snowballed down from there
