Back in the day it was common place to preserve (taxidermy) cats and other animals for photos and other events like this, needless to say many did not die from natural causes. But many of the established photographers only did this to animals that died from natural causes. Despite all that still an interesting/funny photo, at least now photoshop accomplishes the same thing.

When I look at that picture, I see an owner distraught over the death of their beloved pet. They used to do the same type of thing when a small child would die. They'd take pictures of dead people all the time, but they'd open the eyes of the young ones. It is creepy though.
