As someone who also hasn't spoken to their father in a long time:

maybe don't get drunk, but if that isn't a situation that calls for a shot of whiskey I don't know what is.

Found the advice I'm choosing to follow

I feel like it bears repeating, though: one drink can be good for courage, but more than that is most likely a bad idea. (If for no other reason than you'll torpedo whatever leverage you might have had if you come across as drunk should an argument come up.) Only have one if you can stop at one, otherwise listen to what most everyone else said.
