Many of you came across a HIT we posted today called Rating Movie Posters, requiring access codes. As indicated, this HIT was part of an experiment on communication in the MTurk community.


Because access codes were randomly granted to members of the community many Turkers did not have immediate access to these HITs leading to much confusion, frustration, anger and time loss. We deeply regret the trouble this HIT group caused. This was never our intention. We are committed to posting HITs that do not take advantage of the the community or its members and the creation of this HIT created circumstances that broke our commitment. For that we are sincerely sorry.


We did not anticipate the effects this HIT would produce, so you if you feel like you’ve been significantly inconvenienced please do not hesitate to contact us directly: ssuri0@outlook.com

Wow...I had an access code, but it expired for me, I think after I got in about 2. After that, I quickly moved on to something else. Glad I did. Made more than my quota for the day, and then some.

What is the definition of "significantly inconvenienced"?
Does loosing a few hours scouring google and creating forum ID's count?

At least I can use this forum as a future resource so I guess that's a :thumbup:

Sid Suri here. I just wanted to address the recent HIT group we posted called Rating Movie Posters. We noticed that this HIT has generated some discussion because it requires an access code.


First of all, we want to sincerely apologize for any confusion or frustration this HIT has caused, that is not our intention. As some of you have noticed these HITs are part of an experiment, so if you’re not interested in participating or dealing with access codes, you can ignore these HITs altogether. We will post different HITs in the future that won’t require an access code.


Second, rest assured codes do in fact exist and are being continuously sent to hundreds of randomly selected workers as fast as possible. Codes provide access to a subset of the total HIT group and may expire as Turkers use them. You can use any access codes you find to try and work on HITs in this group.


Thanks for all your interest in my HITs and sorry we didn’t make this post sooner.

I got you number buddy. Even if inadvertently, your research breaks some ethical boundaries because it was posted publicly. You put out a test to a large amount of people without getting consent. Even if not accepted as a hit you still used the community for the research. If this is university research plan for whistleblowing, personal misrepresentation in research is a big deal.

You are further misrepresenting by giving an outlook email.

Why act so tough when a simple Google search will show this isn't university research. Im not going to share his papers here but all of this seems to be part of his research. Which ethical violations do you suggest he violated? Why would he need consent in a non-university affiliated test? Is observing people on the internet something that requires consent? No one is forcing us to post about the work on a message board.

Not going to post dudes personal info. He is working on a book with others, and this specific research brings up some liability if he intends to profit off of it. Also, guess where they want to sell the book.
