I climbed the ladder, cautiously this time, and finally reached the top of the storage tank. Fortunately, the tank was nearly full of water.
When I hit the frozen surface with the ax, it bounced up like I had struck concrete. I grabbed the ax handle with both hands and slammed the blade against the ice. A few small flakes of ice broke free. I chopped at the ice some 15 times as hard as I could, and then finally punched a small hole in the 4-inch-thick ice. After beating the ice with the ax for another 10 minutes, I had a hole large enough for the bucket.
The filled bucket, I discovered was quite heavy. I heaved it up and over the top of the tank, spilling icy water on my clothes. I took the rope and let it slide down to Dad. He turned to take it to the stock, but they smelled the water and came running for it.
We worked for more than 30 minutes before the four horses, six cows and four calves were satistied. Then Dad called to me, "Get a bucket of water for the chickens." They were thirsty, too. to be continued ...

Look at it this way: The Hawaiians put beans in the bottom of their snow cones.....I could not get used to that.

Look at it this way: The Hawaiians put beans in the bottom of their snow cones.....I could not get used to that.

we used to put milk duds in the bottom of our ice cream cones so they wouldn't drip...we got known for that
