I was a field service engineer specializing in laboratory automations before the cancer. I dealt mostly with liquid handlers, automated extract storage systems, manipulation arms, and the like.
sounds like a really interesting career.

Oh very nice :) I've been around enough engineers i can sense one lol. Was it too physically demanding after the cancer or did you just want to do something else you were more passionate about?

Not really long term imo, you end up going through a pretty big burn out. I personally took like 5 months off after doing that. I know C to the J @C to the J burned out as well.
I do it in lumps during the month. I work hard for a week or two then take a break for the rest of the month besides like a few daily things. It's probably better to just do good hits as they come though and actually script something.

Rant incoming, but I will keep it one or two posts since I know this isn't the best place for rants. The nursing home my grandma was at just called us and asked me if I knew where she was. They dropped her off for her appointment 7 hours ago and just now noticed she hadn't gotten back from it and if I hadn't written my number and who I was to her down on her corkboard her night nurse STILL wouldn't have known. Who in the FUCK thinks an 81 year old woman need 7 hours to see a doctor?! And I mean they knew NOTHING. They didn't know she'd been admitted, they didn't know why, they didn't know what room she was in nothing. Meanwhile I had all of that information within 20 minutes of getting my grandma's message... at 3:30 this afternoon. Alright rant temporarily concluded. I'm breathing, I'm calm... or I will be.

Does a 55-page thread with two hours left in the day mean today was awful? Because I got stuck late at work and it was awful there too. Sorry guys

We all know making more than $30 a day much like military intelligence and non-evil cats is a fairy tale sir. :tinfoil:
"Military Intelligence" is not an oxymoron, as implied. When you join any branch of the military, you have to take what today is called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery* (ASVAB). In order to be assigned to any intelligence branch [ I was with the Army Security Agency which dealt with SIGINT (signals intelligence" ) ], you have to score in the top ten percent of those taking the ASVAB. MI has significantly helped us win many a battle, and saved many a life. Just say'n.

And the National Security Agency is still hiring. :)

* "The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. As an aptitude test, the ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success. The ASVAB also provides you with career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors whether you choose to go to college, vocational school, or a military career."

I hope your grandma's ok that's the most important thing. After that it sounds like a manager needs to be spoken to.

Yeah she's okay my mom and I are very much on top of her care and her nursing home is half a block from our house. I just wish I understood the failure of communication that let her be gone for 7 hours without anyone noticing, especially when the doctor in question's office closed 4 hours ago.

No she doesn't understand any technology newer than the mid-80s. (I know they had brick cell phones then but still she doesn't get how cell phones work). Like to clarify she was admitted to the hospital straight from her doctor's office so she was okay. It's just her pacemaker was not working as well as they'd like and wanted to do some adjustments. The thing I am indignant about is how no one at the nursing home seemed to feel like her lack of presence was worth mentioning until 9 PM when they dropped her off for her appointment at 2 PM.

It actually was pretty interesting, I miss the job itself sometimes, but never all the other bullshit that came with it. I got to travel to laboratories all over the world and design then build systems to aid in all kinds of interesting research. I kind of fell into it though instead of making a conscious choice to move in that direction, went to Purdue for their engineering program after I left the military... then dropped out before I graduated for a girl (I make notoriously horrible decisions that never go as badly as they could) and got a job as a technician with Dow. Impressed a few people by taking on personal projects of my own at work that made a huge difference to the scientists I was supporting and someone decided to take a chance on me.

Oh very nice :) I've been around enough engineers i can sense one lol. Was it too physically demanding after the cancer or did you just want to do something else you were more passionate about?
It was brain cancer... so I wasn't insurable anymore for travel... I still have a lot of seizures, and some brain damage that affects my ability to move short term memory into long term memory. I forget more about every day than I remember... waking up in the morning is a big reset every day I have to keep meticulous notes because I never know what I am going to retain and what is just going to fall into the black hole of my memory loss. Not a very attractive condition to a prospective employer. And honestly... like I said I swore to never be a wage slave for someone else again. The fight took a lot out of me... chunk of my brain and a chunk of my life... and my priorities changed significantly. I went from being a high achieving ambitious guy who wanted to "rule the world" so to speak... to a guy who just wanted a quiet life and a creative job that made enough to be comfortable.

I didn't realize that. I apologize. I guess I don't know your style yet. But I wasn't mad when I wrote that; I was just being cerebral. :)
I honestly don't even remember where I got it from but on a show or maybe in a movie from ages ago someone was listing off a list of what they considered oxymorons and the list was jumbo shrimp, military intelligence, and mini-vans. I don't know why but that list just always stuck with me when it came time to list oxymorons.

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your family. If they took her there, shouldn't they have also been there to pick her up after her appointment. I cannot imagine how frantic you and your family must have been.
