It's definitely not required but I liked it because I didn'th ave to delete previous work (and the comments that came with it) to post new chapters. Nearly all the crits I got were incredibly useful, the only one that wasn't was someone who just did not fit the books demographics which meant the story didn't really sit right with him. I sort of lost my train of thought, I know I had a point here. edit: Speaking of NaNo, their forums are pretty active during NaNoWriMo and sometimes splinter off and keep in contact throughout the year.
