Rum is made from sugarcane, which is where it gets its sweetness. Whiskey is made from grain and is typically aged in oak barrels, which gives it kind of an earthy flavor (dark rums are aged the same way to get that same sort of character, but they still taste like rum.)

Vodka doesn't really have any sort of character to its flavor, which is why it works well in a lot of mixed drinks. It just tastes like alcohol.
