I don't know. I would normally say "because hosting providers don't like getting slammed like this" but it's AWS which is the largest hosting provider on the planet. So who knows.

Last year I could barely get on Mturk for a few hours during the day (the evening was fine). The site definitely had issues (at least for me). I never really noticed any problems the years before that though.
