It was sort of given to me - But it's the fruit. It's very commonly used in vegan and vegetarian recipes. I don't know what else they do to it - but it appears to be the 'insides' of the fruit.
I've had it raw and found it to be very sweet, but cooked tasted like meat to me. I can't eat it cooked.
ok, do the vegans cook it when its not ripe?

I've never cooked with it personally. Someone else did, and I couldn't eat it. The few times I've had it raw was given to me or at an event. I've never bought it fresh....I would have no idea how to even tell when it's ripe. lol I have bought it dehydrated from nuts.com and found it to be sweet and delicious though. It's like a sweet, chewy jerky. I've heard the seeds are awesome, but I've never had them.ok, do the vegans cook it when its not ripe?
On another note I learned that Nigerians only eat the seeds of breadfruit once it has over ripened to spoiling, but we jamaicans eat the flesh of the breadfruit when it is unripened.
Edit: I say that only to say we can all have different experiences with the same produce.
