As someone who grew up with major ear issues I have to say NEVER use olive oil when an ear infection is present. the bacterial infection breeds in the olive oil and makes it not only worse but can deepen the infection into sub tissue. Always ask a doctor before trying something like this. When an infection is present it is a great way to become permanently deaf.

My mom did this to me when I was younger to try and avoid a $10 co-pay for our insurance. The result was that by the time I was 4 I had lost 90% of my hearing in both ears and had to undergo 3 ear surgeries before I turned 5 to restore as much of my hearing as possible. I'm now 41 and have lived nearly my entire life with severe tinnitus. Life sucks when everything sounds like a television test pattern. My advice is to be safe and not play around with iffy treatments that have no scientific merit, especially with a child. Just see a doctor.

They say it's only safe if there is no infection.

Sorry, not trying to sound snarky in this conversation. I'm just a huge advocate for children's health and people being aware that a lot of homeopathic remedies either don't work or can kill. Not FDA regulated.

Like teething tabs for babies that contain belladonna. All perfectly legal as long as they label it homeopathic.
