He later said he had been so eager to "help fight fascism and Hitler" that he left an Air Corps gunnery school in mid-1941 -- months before the U.S. entry into World War II -- to enlist with the Canadian army and go overseas. He manned an antiaircraft gun during the London blitz before rejoining the U.S. Army, which had by that time declared war and apparently was not being overly meticulous in its background checks.

I remember an "orientation" he gave us. On how to use an atropine injector (about 2 inches long, narrow, with a needle at one end that injects the atropine if forced against a "surface").

We had the orientation at the base movie theater. He's up on the stage in full uniform. He pulls his pants down, sits down on the edge of the stage, says "This is how you inject this stuff," and SLAMS the injector into his thigh. It was quite the performance.

And he was a soldiers soldier, bless his heart.
