I agree that a 4 year degree doesn't necessarily make you smarter or a better worker. Not everyone has the same opportunities for education. I stopped after an associate's degree. I had bills to pay. But I think it might open doors that might not otherwise be available to you, and it certainly increases your earnings. I'm never technically going to be an engineer, and someone right out of college is going to make more than I do even though they don't know anything.
When I rag on education, I'm 99% ragging on arts degrees. Which is what I have. If I had gone for something useful, I'd be in a much different boat. Maybe. I mean I'd have had a shot.

My friends who did computer science and similar things are in waaaay different places. Didn't Bill Gates even drop out of school?

What I want to know is: What is the percentage of poisonous red mushrooms?
I can't remember it off the top of my head for sure, I think it was 50% of poisonous were red, but don't quote me on that.

A lot of people have noticed that a lot of the dilemmas in Star Trek are Trolley Problems. I was talking with a group of writers about that topic in a discussion about getting away from just rehashing the same themes and problems and dealing with them in the same way.

So there's a particular character I've been writing about that kind of symbolizes this different creative universe that is based on some different assumptions, and one of them said "so how would (that character) handle the problem where you have a switch and the train is coming and you have to choose whether to switch it from the five victims to the one victim?"

And I said "derail the train."

And they all did this:

Which I admit was pretty gratifying.

It is kind of a historical irony that the value of (most) degrees has dropped commensurately with the increase in their cost.

With any luck people will be shaking that "system" up to make it more practically useful and less expensive (more competetive). Also, Resilience Training, bitches. No insult intended to anyone who came out of college saddled with crippling debt and anxiety, because those are real problems, but you *should* be coming out of college a badass. Otherwise, what is it for?

I'm afraid I look at this one as unsolvable. 'Cause it's the difference 'tween viewing an unstoppable accident and causing an intentional murder. It's meant to be an ethical dilemma, but amounts to impossible moral choices. When no choice is palatable, then there is no choice at all. You can't use degree of morality as a rule here. It is or it isn't. So my take is a purely legal one. Lay it on society's ethics, not mine.

Unrelated, but Husband just got the "A bat and a ball cost 1.10" problem and questioned it... I always say the ball cost .10... but if the bat is $1 MORE than the ball.... :cyclops:
I'm not sure if this makes you feel any better or not but I've been answering it wrong too. Good company? Eh, maybe. You're in company though at least.

1. I love these hits, for easy mental HITs, just look at a pic and click an obvious observation. They are at least 1.5 minutes long, usually 3 up to 4, depending on task. ~$5/hour for me.

2. These HITs have hard crashed my computer, twice, this past week. I have an older, upgraded computer, but... I close up other tasks now, when I do these. Lots of video ads to review, with these HITs.

3. Sometimes, when you get 2 or more in your queue, they block you for the batch, "Please Skip or Return This HIT, and come back after an hour to see if you can proceed at that moment." I've adjusted panda to only take 1 at a time now, but it's an error on their server, and you're still out that batch. I cursed loudly today when this happened. You'll be able to take the next batch though.

~ one person's take on these HITs ~

Evening everyone! Just dropping in quickly saying hello.
Been visiting my 90 year old grandmother (the other one is almost 97) today. I thought about you Despairagus @Despairagus because she lives in assisted living up in Ft. Wayne. Saw the sign on the interstate for Decatur and remembered the Manley Meat place you told me about, but we didn't visit it today.

I think this one is a value judgment. The accident is stoppable if you're willing to assume the responsibility of redirecting it towards the single death. Your own peace of mind or four peoples lives. Which one do you value more?
