I actually think it was more pronounced in the UK than the US as we were considered a closer and easier target. I was only 11 in 1983. That might be the age I started becoming aware of news and events outside my everyday experience. I remember the news was always carrying stories about violent demonstations by CND outside Greenham Common which had US cruise missiles based there.

I don't know the author but do know the family that lives in Texas. Mr. Finder kind of advertises himself as one of those brats that grew up in the Middle East while his parents "taught English." I was told that, like many authors of this ilk with connections, he'd open his front door and find envelopes of information from people left unnamed and from that he began to write his books.

I would trade masters for that Fives qual, my internet was down for 2 days when they last gave out that qualification. That was a lot of money I lost and I still have not forgiven Centurylink for it. Even if they release the qual now, it would probably oversaturate the hits and they will not even be worth it anymore.
