OT Question:
Would you pay someone to come out and do an estimate?
I have replaced my old electrical box last year and turned off the remnants of the old knob and tube wiring.
except, it isn't a remnant. It's hooked up to 3 sockets I don't use (right above the basement, easy-ish access.....
and. sigh. The furnace
One company put me on a months long wait list
One said sometime in the next month.
The third said in about 2 weeks, but first would come out to do an estimate. That would cost me 50.00.
I've never paid for an estimate before........

I've never paid for an estimate before........

i find it depends on the industry. plumbing and auto repair have charged for estimates, and many will apply it to your bill if you have them do the work.

i would feel better if the $50 estimate fee was given back to you if they do whatever work.

if the electrical work is not very emergency, you may want to wait for those that will give you a free estimate.
