what's a permanent kennel? the kind with plastic sides instead of all wire?
I believe she's talking about the cages with a closeable door.
Personally, I've always been against those.

the problem, in this case, is that the dog is young, and there may be times when everyone is not home -- going out to bring the kid to school, for example. it will take some time before the dog can be responsible enough to be left to her own devices

yeah that's the only time I really use one. and they aren't supposed to be used for punishment, it's supposed to be their refuge. My current puppy never got used to one so I just put her in a jumbo diaper box with the top open and she's cool

Our heeler loves his closeable door kennel. Gets in it when we leave and sleeps in it at night. Feels safe.

I've slept for 15 minutes before. Power naps are a must sometimes.
It takes me so long to fall asleep that I just don't think I've ever been down for only 15minutes. Usually, I try to nap, and someone wakes me up 15minutes after I've actually passed out. So, anything past an hour is heaven. :)
omg I have to sleep for at least an hour and a half. anything less makes me groggy and mad
Me too, usually. Actually, most people run on about a 45min sleep cycle. 45min in to REM, and then 45 back to a fully awake state.(=1.5hours)

We bought the biggest kennel they have for indoors even though our dogs are medium size, they hardly ever use it though.... My friend has a kennel made by KONG that is portable. It is great. She brought it over when I watched her dog for a week and the dog treated it like home. It's not very big, but big enough for the dog to turn around in and has plush inside for him to lie down.

Our dogs sleep on the couch lol but one of them was already house trained when we got him and the other hasn't used a kennel since she was a puppy

yea, it is similar to a den. when I had a dog that was paralyzed with fear by lightning and fireworks (not the normal scared/upset/whiny), I was lucky that I was still doing the animal rescue with my ex; we had like ten of those cages, but only needed 5-7 of them at any time.
we put all these blankets over and around the outside of it, and it became his safespace.
we didn't even talk to him when he was in there, so that it could be his own private place.
