i used to be annoyed by them.. now i'm all like... fascinated by learning their sounds... i can identify a bunch of a robin and cardinal calls cause i get them on every recording.. but i''m also starting to recognize some of the distinct ones.. like a gray catbird is super easy to hear n say oh that's a gray catbird... n mourning doves are super distinctive.. n of course hawks n crows are easy to hear
i went out early this morning in hopes of getting a pic of deer that come out of the woods at odd hours. no deer. but got cardinal, crows, and the red winged blackbirds and geese! geese! we walked up the hill and found a pond where they seem to hang. i'll get the deer one of these days. a buck and doe light footedly flew in front of us like santa's sleigh the other day on the freeway. oh, and cardinals. i miss the cardinals i was feeding in columbus. bunnies are out there too, but too much human activity i guess. they are in the briar patch.

and i watched the haze one minute and then the sun come out the next and make the world a brighter place. here comes the sun!

One of the coolest bird sounds I know is the whippoorwill. Almost every night growing up out in the country we could hear them. I remember many times going out with flashlights to try and find one and we never could. Even when we were right at the tree they were calling from.
I live in the country, and hear the whippoorwill every night on warm summer nights. They can get very loud and very repitious.

My mon was a birdwatcher for years. She had books with colored checkmarks of sightings...She told be of seeing a Trumpeter Swan in Alaska at a lake on an island where my dad was in charge of a lightstation. She said it was the biggest bird she'd ever seen. I know that they get to a wingspread of 6-8'', but what she described was larger. It took all of the 75'' length of that lake for it to get off the water. And when it got up it called like a Klaxon horn.
I still have her books with the checks in them--one color for the Texas hill country, one for the gulf coast and one for Alaska. She never kept one for the Philippines during the war , but she did say she'd seen a Bird of Paradise there.
Bird watching is a addictive hobby.
