OT thoughts and questions... My Aunt wants to sell me her Compaq Presario CQ61, but she knows absolutely nothing about computers and wants me to tell her what its worth. I honestly have no clue. She has barely used it since she's bought it. Had to use it to send work emails and very light internet browsing for about a year. That's it, practically new condition. She's 65 and scared of computers so it has mostly sat on a shelf unused. I'm thinking about using it for the kiddos school and maybe some light turking if it can handle it. What would y'all say it's worth? I want to be fair because she is family and needs a lil green. Do you think it can handle turking? I know it's not the greatest but it seems to be working fairly well for its age. Thoughts?

Best I can tell in some light research is that it was $400 new in 2009. I don't know how much you have to spend but given this is family if it were me I'd offer like half its price or a little less. $150-$200 seems more than fair but given it's family and all and they need the money I think that's a good compromise.

Laptops don't really age well and that looks to be an extremely old one. Considering you could buy something used now that's better for $100 or so I would think at this point you might as well just give her some money as a donation and get the laptop to give to your kid. Minor turking should be fine if you don't have a laptop already its better than nothing when you want to work away from your computer. Other than that maybe as a dedicated scraper or forum viewer if you don't have extra monitors.

I found it for $429 new on some "website"... not even sure if it was legit. Honestly didn't stay on it long...anyways... This thing on has 2GB memory as is a very basic computer. I'm not even sure how old it is, but 2009 might be about right??? We bought my husband's laptop at a pawn shop for $100 and it has 4GB and is newer. So I would think it would be worth more? IDK  So... I was thinking it's worth maybe $50 and since she's family I'll give her $100? She doesn't really "need" the money. Just doing spring cleaning and is selling stuff. We could use a lil computer for our almost 6 year old to use for his spelling programs (monitored use of course!) and I would use it for night turking in bed when I can't sleep. So nothing too crazy... Do y'all think $100 is being too cheap since it is a used computer? Am I thinking logically about this?

i'd say $20-$50 is a fair price. since she's family and could use a bit of cash and u can spare it give her a $100 and both of u can be happy :) If i was just searching randomely on craigslist or facelist i'd probably just offer $25 cash to see if they'd take it

I just worry with used ones what the previous owner what really like. To me computers are like cars. If I get a used one from a pawn shop or wherever I don't know how much porn or whatever other crazy stuff kiddos do on computers these days has been done to it. At least this one is safe and was seriously barely used. I'm still teaching her how to use her iPhone!

I have a really nice desktop with two monitors for my main turking set up, a laptop that is literally knocking on death's door (over heats, lags, randomly shuts off, is 8 years old), and my husband's laptop works ok except he spilled a drink on his keyboard so the keyboard doesn't work... so now I need to buy an external keyboard for it :arghh: My husband and I both turk from home right now, but he is a baby turker compared to me and is still at the stage of asking a million questions and believes that being able to make $30 a day is a myth. :eyeroll:

yeah if i were to buy a used laptop first thing i'd do is wipe it completely and load a fresh copy of windows onto it or any other operating system of choice. No way i'm using whatever they used before.

you can always buy a legit OEM copy for cheap. Its what i've always done. No need to mess around with cracked copies and spoofing
