do you guys own your own modem/router or do you rent from the internet/cable company? thinking about buying 1 so I can get rid of the monthly rental fee from comcast. but it wouldn't be worth it if it breaks because I don't know how to fix those things.

Every ISP that I've ever had made me buy the modem from them up front if I didn't already have one of my own. I'm not an expert, but I think that if you buy one, the chances of it failing are pretty low as long as it's not physically damaged somehow.

I own mine -- bought it off Amazon. My ISP has a list of approved modems on their site and I picked one that was the most up-to-date and it was a lot less buying off Amazon than through them or renting.
