I'm sure my cat would be like Houdini and find some way to get out of that thing. Probably claw me in the process lol.

The cat I had before Lily, would not let me put him in the cat carrier come hell or high water. I had to let him roam free in the car to take him to the vet. Not fun. Lily is much better, no problems getting her in the cat carrier. Sometimes she lets me clip her nails without struggling and sometimes it's a battle of wills.

I am sure you already know this but make sure you don't go to far up on the nail or they will have big trust issues with you cutting the nails even worse than now

Yeah I found that out the hard way years ago when I would clip my dogs nails.

All my cats love their cat carriers when they are just sleeping in them. When it is time for the vet...NOPE!

I have one scratcher made of some kind of emery board I think. The other is looks like some kind of carpet material.

emery board is useless - it doesn't fit the claws correctly, so can't be used correctly
the carpet scratcher teaches the cat that it's ok to scratch carpet material.

if you go to a petstore, look for a corrugated cardboard scratcher.
they fit the claws better, and be refilled, and just feel better for the cat.
the edges allow for the cats to remove annoying burrs in their claws,
which are the reason they scratch in the first place
most come with catnip, which you sprinkle into the cardboard to get them to use it.
and whenever you catch the cat scratching something, don't get mad
pick the cat up, and move their claws along the cardboard so they can feel it.
