This really cracked me up. And not gonna lie, I enjoyed the story's narration and style quite a lot
Thanks ^.^

Are there any type of employee records? Even if it's not as extensive as anything would be today. Maybe you could find someone who wanted to ramble?
UofL has the L&N company records I believe, the railroad's former PR man saved much of it and donated it. The employee magazine has been digitized and is online. I've been thumbing through it and finding bits and pieces of information so far. It only dates back to the mid 1920s, however. The Railpark/Museum in Bowling Green also has a nice collection of L&N stuff too I believe, I think the station there houses the L&N Historical Society's collection of stuff. I've been down there numerous times but there's never anyone from the LNHS to talk to. Newspaper clippings have given me a good deal, I just feel like I need more stuff to fill in gaps. A lot of times stuff about train derailments is what the paper reports but I've found other stuff too. I also have not visited libraries in the towns where the railroad ran...those might be places worth visiting. Sadly I've yet to visit my hometown library (which may have some stuff) which is a few miles up the road from where I live. I've also been reading a book on another nearby L&N branch line... the author that wrote that book though had the advantage of growing up while it was still L&N and still complete... The line I'm interested in ran its last through train (went from one end of the line to the other) six months after I was born, so I don't have that.

When you write, do you try to write start-to-finish like one would read the story, or do you move around to different plot points and try to go back and tie in things later on?

I figure if I'm going to try to write up this piece on the railroad line I was talking about I'd try the latter method, though writing about history probably lets you get away with that. Just past 800 words so far, so a very long way to go. I'm hoping to get a least a (very) rough draft and then start going back in and adding details and other information to tie it all together.

Usually I write the easiest parts first so I have a rough idea of where I'm going, then go back and fill in the blanks.

I was thinking it was a good idea to write that way. It's been so long since I've wrote anything (my school days)... still making decent progress on a rough draft. 4,000 words and 8 pages, and new information is still popping up in online searches. Also feel pretty confident that I can add enough details to what I have already. I think the book on another nearby L&N branch line topped out at a little over 300 pages which is a pretty decent length.

So now I've written 37 words and deleted all of them. Progress is ssergorP. Hmm, ssergorp might be an interesting word to use in... something. It's kind of like the dripping into the 897 buckets sitting under my giant ceiling hole behind me. sssssssr...GORP... ssser...GORP. :writing::bag:

I've reached 5,000 words with my little project. Haven't added too much. Stuff via the newspapers site I have a subscription to is getting a little harder to find. Did manage to find a FB group with guys who worked the line so I may get some stories from them yet. Group has plenty of interesting photos too, at least.

Dammit jaded :p

Also, I think you can nonfiction nano  just most everyone defaults to fiction. And nice job on 4k words!
Thanks, but it's revision, not from scratch and that's not really as impressive, is it? HA HA... yeah, I guess I could just do the memoir anyway (a nonfiction "novel" I guess). November is the month my mother passed away, though, and I'm having a kind of tough time without reminding myself of everything constantly. Of course, I use that excuse all year round. Blergh!

P.S. I have gone on Twitter more in the last few weeks than the entire time I've had it because of your updates. :D :p

Took a short break from writing (Haven't added anything new yet though I've found some more information). Research has kinda been tricky. The local library is a few miles from my house so it's easy for me to get to. Problem is that when I search the papers, I can only search by bringing up the page of an individual issue of the paper and doing a search from there via Ctrl + F. When you don't have dates to work with, that means A LOT of searching.

Also complicating things.. three of the towns/locations I search for are common names or share names with much larger cities in the northeast, like New Haven and Boston...and imagine how many things come up when one types in "Sinks", the east end of the RR.

Good afternoon! I was wondering if any of you participate in/know about any writing groups online? There seem to be some in my community that meet up once a month to read/critique each other's work, but I haven't seen anything online that is like that. (I'm knew to all this, so I could just be looking in the wrong places.) I just thought there might be somewhere hidden on the interwebs where people can join a group that does that......

I really like Scribophile, it has a lot of groups as well. There are swapping groups and crit groups. You really get what you put into it most times. I don't know for sure, but I'm sure there are groups that meet up (online) Usually once you find a good set of people you can sort of branch off and start sharing work between yourselves.

There's a couple writing subreddits as well. I don't really like /r/writing but it's there. /r/writerchat has an IRC and discord which is pretty active.

I don't know if either of those will fit what you need, but they're not too bad and usually a good place to start to find people.

Thank you so much!!! That is very helpful! I mostly just show my work to my husband and he isn't a very reliable critic....I think he's scared....I can't imagine why....
