The murder scene was certainly….unique. He was found at the outside washing station laying face-down in a pile of yellow marshmallow Peeps. Someone on the cruise ship had shoved at least 15 of the chick shaped sugar treats down his throat until he choked on them. Poor C to the J never stood a chance. I looked around the deck to our suspects. Five of them stood there, daring me to figure out the case. Running through my notes and evidence collected from the scene, I started to piece together what really happened.
Evidence:
Detective Notes on the Suspects:
Coffeeowl (ship barista) claims to have been at the coffee shop all day and didn’t see CJ come in. She doesn’t know how the coffee cup got there. She remembers Princess Gina coming in at some point in the morning, but cannot recall the time. I tried to calm her jittery nerves - maybe from commiting the crime or perhaps just too much coffee sampling. She raised her java stained hands that still had coffee grounds stuck to them and said she was okay.
Princess Gina Marie (CJ’s wife) had some Peeps wrappers stuffed in her pockets and sugar crystals on her fingers. She claims to not have seen him since early morning, when he said he was going off of the boat quick to make a purchase. She says she did not have a chance to get to the coffee shop before he left. She believes the receipt is his as he only purchases Funko Pops that are in perfect boxes.
Jaded (head chef) said that it was a relatively slow breakfast morning and she only had two orders come in for toast. The toaster is “broken” and burnt both orders. She delivered one order of toast to CJ before he left and another order to Kerek before his morning show. She appears to be in sad disbelief that so many delicious marshmallow Peeps went to waste on a murder. She kept nervously wiping burnt toast crumbs onto her apron.
Vanyanka (barfly) says she was at the bar early for mimosas. After two or three glasses, she went to the ladies room. She thinks she may have seen CJ in passing as she was also planning on going to the Collectibles shop. She says the receipt isn’t hers though, as she is terrified of bunnies and would never add that Funko to her collection. After seeing CJ, she returned to the bar for her purse, then went back to the ladies room to freshen up for her trip off the boat.
Kerek (ship mascot) saw someone matching CJ’s description in the hall this morning right as he was leaving to go to the deck for a kids’ party. It looked like CJ was going off deck, perhaps to make the purchase. He waved to the man and got a hello in exchange. He says that although the ship had cases of Peeps up on deck leftover from the party’s snack table, he didn’t touch them as fitting into the panda suit keeps him on a strict no-sugar diet. His costume was shedding fur like crazy, even as he stood and told me his alibi of the children’s party.
Something caught my eye as I looked up from my notes. Upon closer examination, I found the Funko Pop! It was a rare bunny suit Ralphie in a very dented box. Other than the crushed sides, there was nothing out place on the box. It was in pristine, clean condition. This clinched the case. I knew who did it.
