Not just you. Maybe it's a cultural/generational/regional thing? My parents never discussed money, at all, with kids around. I remember asking once how much money my dad made (it was for some kind of form, I think, maybe when I was in middle school or so) and being told I should never ask such a thing and to never ask that again. Even now as an adult and them retired, I have no idea how much they made or how their financials are currently. Same deal with all of my relatives that I can think of. Money and money issues were just never, ever discussed in the family. Every time I get the survey question about how much money my family had growing up, I really have no idea how to answer it accurately other than thinking about it situationally. We weren't homeless. I had the things I needed. But we didn't vacation or have fancy cars. So I guess middle-ish?
Totally replying to a super old post because this is the first time I've been back all day!

Yeah, we didn't get to talk about money much, either. Even when my parents filled out my FAFSA I wasn't allowed to look. The only thing I knew about our money is they never had enough to buy me all the stuff I asked for :) .

However, I just now asked my mom what they made when I was a kid and she was super willing to tell me now, lol!

They "claimed" it was a "mistake" from what I'd read.

(or because they got caught)
