how long does it usually last?
that's it - one day
seriously, yesterday was slow due to Labor Day here in the states. Usually picks up some once students start doing projects for class. But a lot depends on your demographics, quals, etc. Those of us who've been on longer will usually do better b/c we have a bunch of quals we've gotten over the years, have a bunch of scripts, use multiple ways of searching for hits to do, and have plenty of padding so we can take a chance on new batches. So we can do a few hundred or a few thousand on a new batch without worrying about dropping below 99% approval if every one gets rejected.
Sorry to be kind of a downer, but mturk is erratic, esp. if you're new, and it's hard to count on X amount every day

one day? At one point I had a steady amount coming in but it seems like it slowed down a lot

so mturk is heavily based on school?
yes. grad students and some undergrads post surveys that they need data for. batch work is better than survey's, but they have slowed down quite a bit over the past few years. Still, your best bet is to catch a batch if you can
