wonder why we don't see surveys about how we are going to cope when our cell phones are shut off and the cable and Internet shut down because we can't pay for them. yep, I'd like to see some surveys about that.

I heard part of NY Governor's address yesterday or the day before where he stated he had arranged with the internet and cable provider(s) that those things would stay on in NY even if they were in arrears.

why would you lose internet? comcast is offering free wifi during the epidemic. i do realize they aren't nationwide, tho, so i suppose you can beg your internet provider to work with you if paying for internet with no free wifi is an issue.

and these companies are going to be able to keep the system up without money coming in? Are workers going to go out and fix it without pay? It sounds like an easy fix but think it through. These companies are the worst if you don't pay and they will do auto shut off.

And when this calms down and they request payment in full?
Well, that's an issue for another time and it is a concern. Right now the focus is allowing people to stay informed, entertain them so they don't fight with each other, keep them at home, and allow Distance Learning to occur.

I'm going to assume they have enough customers who are able to pay during the pandemic in order to meet payroll and cost of the internet backbone. If not, i'm sure they can get a loan from the government in that $2.2T legislation to help cover the shortfall until things get back to normal. I'm also going to assume the utility co. will work on payment plans with customers knowing customers may be slammed with a monster bill for months of service not paid for as its better to set up a payment arrangement the customer might be able to keep than to cut off service and write off the uncollectible amount.

The government could nationalize the internet business if it came right down to it. There's no way they can afford to have any significant sector of the public cut off from cable and internet because relatively few people have antenna TV these days.
