I have worked very gradually on MTurk just over 2 years now, and just completed my 5000th HIT and feel I just had to share it with all of you.
If this helps some of the new Turkers out there, I am grateful. And to learn how to gracefully be an MTurker, you may want to read this prose.
I remember vividly when and why I started using MTurk. It was 2 years ago, and I'd just come off of having a stroke, received the normal 6 months of unemployment, and found that I needed more money to pay my utility bills. But, I wanted to find something on the internet to do, and something that didn't take up all of my time.
After doing much research on places to find work by googling, using Youtube and such. I found one or two places to find legitimate work where you didn't have to pay anything, and actually paid you what you earned. The best I found was MTURK. And what a Godsend it was to me. So, I started December 8th of 2017. And the first jobs paid an embarrasing 2 to 5 cents a HIT. I must've been insane. After about 50 jobs, I googled some sort of help in satisfying my mind that I had chosen the correct thing to be doing for money. And then it drove me to this MTurk Crowd bulletin board. I read a ton of things people were posting...but one in significance got me for sure. And I followed it the best I could, and reread it several times. I just know that it was written by #1jklmnop on Jan 12, 2016 (Wish I could remember the post name, but only have what I have, hopefully someone can re-post it here as it meant everything to me while MTurking.
Now, I must admit that I never installed things like Turkmaster, Hitscraper, Hit Monitor, or AutoHotKey onto my computer, though I did find other things to use and they helped me. I started using a few things and began my ascencion towards the 5000 HIT Mark his post had mentioned.
I'd suggest finding a way to do things your own way in MTurking or you'll get annoyed and perturbed. Make it easy on yourself. What I did was to just do 10 jobs every day. (Basically tough to find 10 things on Saturday or Sunday...but, that's college work for ya). Yeah.....at first I was pulling in maybe 3 bucks a day.....but it got better.
Once I got to 500 HITS done, I did notice a slight increase of better payers coming my way. And I couldn't wait to see what the 1000th hit would bring (as mentioned again in his/her post).
And it did get better once I got to that 1000th HIT. I was sometimes making $10,00 a day or even better doing just 10 HITS a day. And that is when I made sure to do things noted in his article. Things like checking Qualifications, getting approved for jobs at least once a week, and continuing to read the precious articles on this MTurk Crowd board. Now, I'm sure that many of you have had higher incomes than I have done on MTurk, but I've managed to make around $200 per month...and that takes care of all my utility bills. So, much worth it to me.
And what I like is that I've maintained an over 99% (currently 99.26) approval rating. Please make sure you note to yourself any that do give you a rejection. I've only had 27 of them getting to my 5000th HIT. And they hurt, but not as much as the first 5 did. It just comes with the territory.
I've made $3351 so far on MTurk, and that buys a lot of electric, water, and phone bills. So, it can be done. And you all can do it also. Do I do it every day? NOPE. That's why it took me 2 years to get to 5000. But, I love that the work is always there, no matter what time I want it.
I just want to thank all the people here on MTurk Crowd that have helped me make $$$. And the lovely crowd that you all are.
How much pay does it better after reaching 5000 HITS? I have no idea....but I know that I'll be doing it as long as I and MTurk exists.

Have a Great day all! And Work-The-Turk!!!

Thank you for your post, Michael. I found it motivating!

You "HIT" the nail on the head when you said the first 5 rejections hurt. I am a new turker and I have 5. It is taking me a long time to recover. Learning the system can be painful and I am taking it slow.
