I am new so bear with me- I am wondering if I will get in trouble- or just denied access if I try to do a job more than once. Its getting a little confusing trying to remember if I did a job or not. Thank you.

Are you using scripts yet? If not you'll want to check out the information here.

I would recommend this script for keeping track of the HITs you've done. If you're using Hit Scraper, it will connect with that and show little boxes next to each hit so you can quickly see if you've done work for that requester and also if you've done that exact HIT's name before (though it could be a new survey) More importantly, it will give you the ability to search your work history by adding a section below your normal mturk dashboard.

That being said. Many requesters will use some way to prevent retakes on their surveys i.e. using your ip address, assigning you a qual, or other means. Neither of these thing will help you 100% of the time, so being honest when you think you remember having done the survey before is pretty much your last line of defense.

I'm assuming here that you know that most tasks that are not a survey are termed 'batches', those you can do as many as you can stand unless it explicitly mentioned a limit in the instructions.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much- Can you please give an example of "batches" for me everything seems to be a survey. I have experienced one where I have to formulate questions around words- which I assume would be considered "batches"

There are a few things that are signs of surveys. Surveys likely have all or most of these:

  • Consent form you have to agree to first.
  • The work is hosted on a separate site like Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, or SurveyGizmo.
  • There are demographic questions like your age, gender, income, etc. before you get to any questions.
  • There are several pages of questions and then it ends with a thank you message and a code to enter on MTurk.

Batches, on the other hand, are generally HITs that ask you to answer a question or set of questions and are most often done on the HIT page itself.

Of course, there are exceptions to this but after you do more and more HITs, you'll get better at recognizing the difference between batches and surveys.

On most survey HITs you'll only see 1 HIT available. On batches you're going to see lots, maybe thousands available, usually a few hundred. If you change your search settings on mturk to "most available" you see lots of "batches" available. A lot of these are not worth the time/pay. Most receipts HITs, for example, are not going to make you a lot of money.

Trial and error, and watching the daily thread are your best bets in finding 'good' batches to work on.
