Hello Everyone! Just Started Turking on Tuesday... have just been playing around to see how everything works. . . I see a lot of HITs with outrageous number of jobs(batches?). I get that I need to get my qualifications up, and that there are demographic qualifications that Requesters can place on a HIT. I am seeing where the good paying HITs are usually for Transcribing audio or video Files.

Does anyone have a good practice website for practicing my transcribing skills to see which HITs, I may be able to do? I am averaging about 40-45 WPM on typing test websites, but I am a bit fearful I might get a job that has several speakers I may have to keep track of. . . I guess I need to learn more about Transcription Skills.

I am not looking to earn a living doing this, but I am over 50, and I have not gotten that many interviews this year, and I am getting sick of the looks, when I walk into an interview and I can see them thinking "Great, I have to interview an old guy!" or I have heard: "Are you sure you would be able to keep up with this job, it is pretty fast paced. . ."

Anyways, while I have been unemployed, I have looked at different online "WAH" options, and have been using different websites to practice typing, since I am not doing anywhere close to the volume of typing I used to do for my job, which was a technical service rep for a pump company, where I needed to answer emails and phone calls for pump specs and sizing recommendations, quotes, govt bids, etc.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't do a lot of transcription hits, but perhaps another @Mentor might have advice on this? Hitflo and Transcribe This are two requesters with short transcription hits, so keep an eye out for those hits. And keep an open mind when working on Mturk- a lot of transcription work can be underpaid, so also look for decent-paying batches and surveys.

Just a note on the larger paying transcription hits, that's not going to be where you make money. High pay doesn't equal great hourly. You might be paid $20-$30 for a transcription that takes hours. Personally, I find the quick, small paying hits are more time worthy.

:wave2: Welcome to MTC! I used to do some transcription but find that simpler smaller batches of other work make me more money on MTurk. I hope you find what works for you!

Hello T @Timothy Hirabayashi
Welcome to mturk crowd!
To practice typing I gathered a few links together for you. Once you think you have practiced enough. Speechpad qualifications and crowdsurf qualifications are good ones to take. Having low numbers can take a little bit of time. To offset low paying hits to get your numbers up, grab some surveys that you do qualify for. You can certainly make a lot of money turking once you get the hang of it! Good luck and feel free to reach out to us as more questions pop up. :)

coffeeowl @coffeeowl Thank You! :coffeeman: I think it is TO that also calculates per hour pay(?) Seems like Transcription jobs have good pay, but some of them have loooong a/v files in their description!

ElleWoods @ElleWoods Thanks for the advice. Do you have any examples for the "quick, small paying hits"? I think for now I may just need to power through some of the cheaper hits to get past probation:!!:

Ben peterson, customer interests are both good, safe hits to work on. If you haven't yet, install MTurk Suite (it's a chrome extension) there is a feature called hit finder that will help you search for hits that you're qualified for. For now, I'd only work green or possibly yellow hits. You don't want to get a rejection early on.

academic survey's won't get numbers up - but they are generally safe. (They sort-of-suck, but when you're new - the pay is -often- okay.)

jan @jan Thank You! I have taken a few "Academic Surveys", I noticed on one there was a pre-survey to determine qualification for larger survey. Got $0.10 for the pre-survey, but did not qualify for the main survey. Also, participated in a veterans survey, since I was in the Air Force from '83-'87 and that one was pretty easy. . .
